Virginia NAACP Opposes Bill #SB1274 – Witness Impeachment Evidence Designation

The NAACP Virginia State Conference (Virginia NAACP) stands firmly against Bill #SB1274, the proposed Witness Impeachment Evidence Designation bill, which poses a direct threat to the integrity of police and criminal justice reform efforts in our Commonwealth.

This bill effectively shields law enforcement officers from accountability, allowing those with a history of inconsistent statements or misconduct to remain in positions of power without fear of disciplinary action. By prohibiting the discharge or discipline of officers based solely on their designation as witnesses with impeachment evidence, we risk undermining public trust in our justice system.

We believe that accountability is essential to restoring faith in law enforcement and ensuring that justice is served fairly. This legislation not only hampers the efforts to hold officers accountable but also places the interests of law enforcement above the rights of citizens and victims of crime.

The Virginia NAACP calls upon lawmakers to reject Bill #SB1274 and prioritize reforms that enhance transparency, accountability, and trust within our criminal justice system. We must ensure that all officers are held to the highest standards of conduct to protect our communities and uphold justice for all.
